Digitalization is increasingly permeating all phases of building construction. In Switzerland, the industry has made huge progress in the last two years. Our experience – especially with BIM to Field – shows one thing clearly: we have to change our processes. When it comes to making collaborations more successful and avoiding mistakes, the digital has to get out of the machine. That is not a contradiction!

With the start of our planning work for the new Baden Cantonal Hospital, the topic of BIM has finally arrived on the construction site for us as well. No one who has built with digital methods wants to do without them again. We receive only positive feedback.

BIM to Field is an important and exciting step for us. When we introduced BIM at Archim AG (Confirm, steigerconcept, IMOOO) three years ago, we started with the so-called “little BIM”. Sections and floor plans could be generated automatically. In a second step, we made the 3D model capable of coordination. Getting some planners excited about the new model was a big challenge, but it has brought us the greatest benefit so far. The error rate in building services coordination has decreased significantly, and efficiency has increased considerably. In the third and fourth step, we linked the scheduling and cost planning to the 3D model and thus brought construction management and logistics planning on board. Since then, we are able more consistently to avoid the communicative “blind flight” between the phase completions, which are sometimes far apart in time. In addition, we reduce a large part of the dimensioning work, which is usually perceived as a irritating.

Going to the construction site with BIM is a logical step: from planning to implementation – and later also use – all participants are gradually integrated into the BIM model. For this to succeed, we need a new corporate culture that brings people and processes together again and makes visible who does what and when.
