NEW REPLACEMENT BUILDING FOR THE TROTTE OLD PEOPLE’S CENTER, ZURICH WIPKINGEN

The Trotte Centre for the Elderly no longer meets current operational and structural requirements. The room structures are too narrow and too low, and therefore problematic, especially for people with walking aids. The residents’ rooms do not have their own bathrooms. After detailed feasibility and cost studies by the Office of Structural Engineering, the Zurich City Council decided in favor of a new replacement building. The winning project of the open project competition consistently develops the proven form of living according to the concept of the retirement centers of the City of Zurich. The range of services should be flexible and individually selectable to meet the needs of the residents.

The compact building form is a main feature of the present project. It has a positive effect on the economic efficiency of the building and is the basis for achieving the MINERGIE-P-Eco Standard. Thanks to its compact volume, the new building is able to react in a differentiated way to the neighboring buildings. The careful ground plans allow for an attractive orientation of the apartments with views over the City of Zurich. The new building has 91 one-bedroom- and 1 two-bedroom -apartments. Of the 91 one-bedroom apartments, 16 can be individually combined into two-bedroom apartments with minimal building construction work. The spacious restaurant opens up onto an attractive outdoor space between the Nordstrasse and the Trottenstrasse, which is also open to the neighborhood community.

By meeting the MINERGIE-P-ECO Standard, the new replacement building meets the highest energy and ecological requirements.
